Human trafficking is the fastest growing crime in the world. In the United States alone, between 100,000 and 300,000 children are at risk of commercial sexual exploitation (sex trafficking) each year (Estes and Weiner, 2001). Young girls, especially girls of color and those who have been sexually abused, are disproportionately at risk of being trafficked. Today, Philadelphia City Council members Helen Gym, Kendra Brooks and Jamie Gauthier announced the Reproductive Freedom Platform, a set of laws aimed at defending access to abortion and protecting patients, providers, caregivers and all those seeking reproductive care. Women continue to face barriers at school and work that can prevent them from achieving economic security and independence. From kindergarten to higher education, girls face discrimination in education – they are excluded from STEM programs, have fewer opportunities in athletics, and face unacceptable levels of sexual harassment and violence.
